Driving in North Chicago and what it does to your vehicle

North Chicago traffic follows the base and hospital shift schedule, with heavy bursts on Sheridan Road, Buckley Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Service members and staff who are new to the area often arrive with vehicles that have never seen a northern Illinois winter, and the first salt season is hard on brakes, batteries and exhaust systems.

Good to know

• New to Great Lakes? Before your first winter, have the battery tested and the tires, wipers and coolant checked.
• If you are transferring in from a warm state, ask us to look over the underbody after the first winter for salt damage.
• Drop off early on your way to the base or hospital if that works for your schedule. Call to arrange it.
