Check engine light and computer diagnostics in Zion
Computer diagnostics, trouble codes, TPMS and warning lights.
Short answer: A check engine light means your vehicle computer has stored a trouble code. The code points to a system, not a part. At Roe Automotive we read the codes, test the system the code points to, and find the actual cause, then explain the repair and the estimate before we start.
Signs you need check engine light and diagnostics
- The check engine light is on steady
- The check engine light is flashing (pull over safely and call us)
- The engine runs rough, stalls or hesitates
- Fuel mileage has dropped
- The tire pressure (TPMS) light stays on after you add air
- Other warning lights: ABS, airbag, charging, traction control
What the work includes
- Reading and recording stored and pending trouble codes
- Pinpoint testing of sensors, wiring and components
- Misfire, fuel trim and oxygen sensor diagnosis
- Evaporative system (EVAP) leak testing
- TPMS sensor diagnosis and service
- Clearing codes once the repair is done and confirmed

Why it matters around Zion
A loose gas cap and EVAP leaks are common check engine causes in our area, and so are sensors and connectors damaged by winter salt and moisture. In Lake County, an unresolved check engine light can also mean a failed Illinois emissions test, so it is worth fixing before your test notice arrives.
Questions and answers
Can I keep driving with the check engine light on?
If the light is steady and the car drives normally, you can usually drive it to the shop soon. If the light is flashing, the engine is misfiring and can damage the catalytic converter. Slow down, avoid hard acceleration and call us.
Why not just read the code at a parts store?
A free code read tells you which system set the light, not which part failed. Replacing the part named in the code description often does not fix the problem. We test the system to find the actual cause.
Will clearing the code fix the problem?
No. Clearing a code only turns the light off until the fault returns. It also resets the readiness monitors the Illinois emissions test checks, so a cleared car can fail its test.
